[10:12]  ¹ tn Heb “and Resen between Nineveh and Calah; it [i.e., Calah] is the great city.”

[13:2]  ² tn Heb “heavy.”

[13:2]  ³ tn This parenthetical clause, introduced by the vav (ו) disjunctive (translated “now”), provides information necessary to the point of the story.

[17:3]  ⁴ tn Heb “And Abram fell on his face.” This expression probably means that Abram sank to his knees and put his forehead to the ground, although it is possible that he completely prostrated himself. In either case the posture indicates humility and reverence.

[17:3]  ⁵ tn Heb “God spoke to him, saying.” This is redundant in contemporary English and has been simplified in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[44:11]  ⁶ tn Heb “and they hurried and they lowered.” Their speed in doing this shows their presumption of innocence.

[49:12]  ⁷ tn Some translate these as comparatives, “darker than wine…whiter than milk,” and so a reference to his appearance (so NEB, NIV, NRSV). But if it is in the age of abundance, symbolized by wine and milk, then the dark (i.e., red or perhaps dull) eyes would be from drinking wine, and the white teeth from drinking milk.
